Thirty years ago, setting up a company was relatively easy and straightforward. Today, things are a lot more complex, with many different and sometimes seemingly conflicting responsibilities and laws to comply with. And then someone with a clipboard and a hi-visibility vest turns up and tells you that you need to spend a load of time and money on more paperwork! If only they would leave you alone so you can get on and try and make some money.
Attis consultants have been there, seen it, done it, bought the T-shirt and a ‘Kiss me quick’ hat to go with it. People who have had to come up with results, day in and day out, quickly and often under huge pressure working for prominent organisations. In short, we understand exactly what it is that you have to go through just to makes end meet. So, reassuringly, we are already speaking your language before we even get our clipboards out.
But adding health and safety to your organisation, like some sort of ‘bolt-on’ that just ticks the box is not ideal. Making the safety of everyone in your organisation a singular priority – a natural part of what you do as an organisation – is key to improving staff morale. And that in turn will have a positive effect on productivity. Your clients will also be comforted by your intrinsic safety values and will be more likely to keep their custom with you. Your suppliers will be required to follow your example – and those who don’t will have to improve, or find themselves replaced, meaning your supply chain improves in efficiency, quality and continuity. The families of your staff will appreciate that their loved-ones work for a responsible organisation, one that values its employees. Suddenly, your organisation, by encouraging a good health and safety culture, has touched and improved the lives of many, many more people than it actually employs.
This is no rose-tinted imagining; an unrealistic dream of a land of milk and honey and happy people with hi-visibility vests and clipboards. Interestingly, much of what needs to be done to create this landscape is already being done by your organisation. You already have plans and policies in place that govern what you do and how you do it. You will already monitor your organisation for things like productivity, profitability and efficiency. You may already employ administrators and clerks to keep tally on a variety of information. With just a few minor changes, this information can be wrapped around a culture of health, safety and welfare that can only improve your organisation; and the potential that is has to be truly great. Now is that worth spending time on?
